Fresno Yosemite International Airport (IATA: FAT) is a public-military airport situated around 10 kilometers from Fresno's city center. It serves the San Joaquin Valley and three national parks, including Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon.

There are frequent flights to several of the largest airport hubs in the United States and international services to Mexico. About 957,827 passengers entered and exited Fresno-Yosemite International Airport in 2021.

The facility debuted in June 1942 as the military Airport Hammer Field. The city of Fresno owns and maintains the Airport, which has two runways in a 1,730-acre area. Its airport code, FAT, represents the Airport's original name, Fresno Air Terminal.

Due to the Airport's location in the state's center, several military, police, firefighting, and medical aviation units call it home.

The Airport also has facilities for the California Army National Guard, the California Highway Patrol, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, and the Fresno Police Department.

The Fresno Yosemite International Airport began as a military airstrip in June 1942, about six months after the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor, precipitating the United States' entry into World War II.

The US Air Forces used the new airstrip, Hammer Field, as a training center for the Fourth Air Force's new pilots.

It featured a single, 7,200-foot-long runway that extended from northwest to southeast. This runway is currently designated as 11L/29R.

In May 1944, the 319th Wing replaced the 481st Night Fighter Operational Training Group at Hammer Field, where Northrop P-61s were used for night fighter training.

The addition of Bell P-59 Airacomet training to the 319th mission in 1944 was confirmed by the 319th Wing's commanding commander, Colonel Ralph H. Snavely.

Chandler Field, which was opened in November 1929, was utilized by civil and commercial aircraft at the time.

Chandler is situated on a tiny plot of land 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Fresno's Downtown.

Fresno is a city in California's San Joaquin Valley, comprising around 112 square miles with a population of 542,107 in 2020. It is the fifth-most populous city in California, the state's most populated inland city, and the nation's 34th-most populous city.

The hot season lasts for three and a half months, from June 6 to September 21, with average daily high temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. July is Fresno's warmest month, with average highs of 98°F and lows of 68°F.

The chilly season spans 3.1 months, from November 20 to February 22, with average daily high temperatures below 64 degrees Fahrenheit. December is the coldest month in Fresno, with average lows of 40°F and highs of 57°F.
